Broad Heart

Have an open heart.  Be broad-minded about the world.
The world is in your own heart.

GI: Ichimura Mitsugoro (1) 44-1

When people deepen and strengthen their faith, they acquire a particular sense of value.  They feel good about themselves and gain an inner conviction that faith is important and good.  A danger, however, is that some of these people will become intolerant of those without faith or of a different faith.  Although religions preach love and peace, such religious narrow-mindedness has caused persecution and provoked war throughout history.

Konko Daijin taught people to not belittle other religions while revering only their own beliefs.  According to Ichimura Mitsugoro, Konko Daijin also taught,

"Kami (Principle Parent of the Universe) does not discriminate between religions.  All religions are within this universe.  Don't be so narrow-minded by discriminating against other religions or by following one religion obsessively.  Open your heart, have a broad-mind, and be a person of the world." (Kyoten-Gorikai II, Ichimura M 17-2)

Furthermore, Konko Daijin showed his broad-mindedness toward people who went contrary to his teachings,

"If there is a useless child among five, the parents will love that child even more.  For Kami also, He loves those with less faith more.  Practice faith and receive divine blessings."  (Kyoten - Gorikai I, Ogihara S. 26-1)

At the same time, we must not confuse tolerance with a wavering faith.  To receive the divine favor fully, we must be single-hearted.  Our single-heartedness toward Kami leads us towards tolerance; our faith in the Principle Parent of the Universe guides us to open our hearts.
