Humbleness

Don't flaunt your intelligence, knowledge, or judgment.

Wear a belt of sincerity, accumulate divine virtue

and acquire human virtue.

GI: Ichimura, Mitsugoro 16-1,2

You can have self pride without being egotistic.  You can listen rather than speak, even if you have more knowledge than another person,   By remaining humble and sincere in this way your faith will grow and you can avoid hurting others and thus gain their respect.

When you flaunt your intellegece or make judgments against others, your mind is speaking for you -- instead, you should speak from your faith with a sincere heart.  We need to maintain a sincere heart at every moment of our lives.  It is said that sincerity must be worn like a belt of faith that is always with you.  When you are humble and live with sincerity, you will accumulate divine virtue effortlessly, and your human virtue will shine eternally.

Divine virtue is the power or ability given by Kami which will enable us to help others.  To accumulate divine virtue we must have sincere faith in Kami and be trusted by Kami.  Human virtues are developed within our own hearts as we go about our lives in society.  The qualities of human virtue include being well-liked and respected as a person.  Human virtues are obtained by living a life of true sincerity, and treating others fairly with respect and compassion.
