Patience

Lose and endure it.
You may think it is foolish to lose,
but Kami will compensate for your losing.
Others will speak well of you,
and you will gain virtue.

GII:  T. Komoto 9-1

We live in an increasingly competitive world, and we feel strong pressures to be assertive, stand firm, and fight for our opinions and beliefs.  It seems that the message, "Lose, and endure it," goes against all the learning and training we receive as we grow up in this modern society.  What is Konko Daijin trying to tell us?

Konko Daijin is trying to teach us that there are advantages from having a more humble, accommodating attitude.  More specifically, he is teaching us that we need not be so aggressive, and fight and struggle against the people around us.  We can "Lose, and endure it," and in the process gain an inner strength and satisfaction that can be more valuable than what we gain by "winning" with aggression.

The main benefit of maintaining a humble attitude is that we can remain calm when we have a conflict with someone.  We won't feel the need to "beat them" or "win," and so we are freed from the anger and resentment which often follows such an argument.  When we realize the benefits we receive from "losing" in certain situations, we can do so confidently with the knowledge that we are indeed compensated by Kami.  We will receive the admiration of others, and gain a quiet inner strength.
